Five Finger Prayer Guide

Here is a simple prayer that has been attributed to Pope Francis, which he wrote as a Cardinal.  It’s called the “five finger prayer guide. “ The thumb is the closest finger to you. So start praying for those who are closest to you. They are the persons easiest to remember. To pray for our dear ones is a “sweet obligation.” The next finger is the index. Pray for those who teach you, instruct you and heal you. They need the support and wisdom to show direction to others. Always keep them in your prayers. The following finger is the tallest. It reminds us of our leaders, the governors and those who have authority. They need God’s guidance. The fourth finger is the ring finger. Even that it may surprise you, it is our weakest finger. It should remind us to pray for the weakest, … [Read more...]

Questions Welcomed

Lately, the Church’s teaching on marriage, sexuality and contraception has been getting a good deal of public attention in the media. This has naturally led to people asking questions, especially if this teaching is news to them. Even as Catholics, we may be struggling with questions of our own. It’s good and helpful for us to acknowledge and explore our questions. And it’s healthy for us to grapple with God the Father’s desire for our happiness. He understands our human nature—his Son became one of us (Jesus is true God and true man)!  Jesus, through his Spirit of wisdom and knowledge, can handle the questions, struggles, or anxieties we bring to him (see Matthew 11:28). Pope St. John Paul II, quoting the words of Christ, would often encourage us: “Do not be afraid!” We should never … [Read more...]
