Eucharistic Procession!

All are invited to participate in a Eucharistic Procession immediately following the 10:30am Mass next weekend.  The procession will exit the Church, turn right on Napoleon Avenue and then go around the school and the church before returning into the church for Benediction. It will be lead by a crucifer, and we will chant Eucharistic hymns as we bring carry Jesus in the Holy Eucharist throughout our neighborhood, after which we will have a fish fry and serve snow balls for young and old! We would like to invite First Communicants and young children (K-4th) to wear white attire to lead the procession.  Please meet in the front of the church near the confessional immediately after the 10:30am Mass and we will direct you.  Either bring your own decorated basket for rose petals, or one will … [Read more...]

What a Gracefilled Night!

Thanks so much to Cait Muldoon and her great team that put together a wonderful “Grace Under Fire” cookoff between Father Leo Patalinghug and myself against Chef Justin Devillier of La Petite Grocery and Chef Chris Barbato of Commander's Palace. Thanks to Mary Matalin for her great job emceeing the event, and to our great team of Judges: Judge Martin Feldman, Caroline Ponseti, Jeff Crouere, Betsy Sterkx and Sister Leah Couvillion. Ever the careful jurist, Judge Feldman gathered together all of the facts, examined the law, applied the law to the facts and determined that the contest was . . . a tie! After a requested rehearing on the merits, he was persuaded to reexamine the record. The verdict was that the winner was the crowd of hungry diners who got to taste two great dishes! Father Leo … [Read more...]

Our Lady of Fatima Rosary

Our Lady of Fatima Rosary – May 13 On 13 May 1917, ten year old Lúcia Santos and her younger cousins, siblings Jacinta and Francisco Marto, were tending sheep at a location known as the Cova da Iria near their home village of Fátima in Portugal.  Lúcia described seeing a vision of a woman "brighter than the sun, shedding rays of light clearer and stronger than a crystal ball filled with the most sparkling water and pierced by the burning rays of the sun.” Thousands of people flocked to Fátima and Aljustrel in the ensuing months, drawn by reports of visions and miracles. As early as July 1917 it was claimed that the Virgin Mary had promised a miracle for the last of her apparitions on 13 October, so that all would believe. What transpired became known as “Miracle of the Sun.” A … [Read more...]

From the Pastor – May 19, 2013

When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. (Acts 2:1-4) The word “Pentecost” is actually a Greek word meaning “fiftieth.”  What we commemorate on Pentecost is the Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, an event which occurred fifty days (including Easter Sunday) after the Resurrection. Historically and symbolically, Pentecost is related to the Jewish Festival of Weeks, celebrating the day … [Read more...]

Cross Lifted High!

Photo by David Grundfield, The Times-Picayune Obviously, we finally did it!  Thanks to parish sexton, Liam Cousino; B & G Crane, LLC; CIS Steeplejack, LLC; and all who worked so hard to raise the Cross fabricated by Thomas Bruno.  Although the Times Picayune declined to tell the story of the Cross in the paper (apparently “good news is no news” is the order of the day with our local paper!), they did send a brave photographer, David Grundfield, who went up in the crane to take some spectacular photos of the cross towering high above the City of New Orleans. … [Read more...]

Ave Crux, Spes Nostra!

Ave Crux, Spes Nostra!(Hail the Cross, Our Hope!) In honor of the raising of the cross this week, I wanted to share a beautiful sermon by Saint Theodore the Studite about the precious and life-giving Cross of Christ:How precious the gift of the cross, how splendid to contemplate! In the cross there is no mingling of good and evil, as in the tree of paradise: it is wholly beautiful to behold and good to taste. The fruit of this tree is not death but life, not darkness but light. This tree does not cast us out of paradise, but opens the way for our return. This was the tree on which Christ, like a king on a chariot, destroyed the devil, the Lord of death, and freed the human race from his tyranny. This was the tree upon which the Lord, like a brave warrior wounded in his hands, feet and … [Read more...]

Congratulations to Dixie Williams!

On May 2, 2010, our parish secretary Dixie Williams will be awarded the Order of St. Louis IX Medallion by Archbishop Aymond at St. Louis Cathedral.  The Order of St. Louis IX award was established more than 40 years ago to honor those members of the laity who have contributed their time and talents to the church.  Although it is rare that the award goes to an employee of the parish, it is obvious to anyone that Dixie's work for the parish is much more expansive than her morning work hours!  Dixie's here virtually every day, including weekends and many evenings.  Even as I write this little article at 6:00pm on Friday, she's waiting for me to call her so that she can come back to copy it for the bulletin insert on Saturday morning!  THANKS for all that you do for our parish, Dixie!  … [Read more...]
